Inspirada por un empleado de hotel que se negó a permitirle a Dylan una habitación debido a su apariencia "sucia", la canción, un clásico folk dilanesco, también se inspira en la ópera de Brecht y Weill "Pirate Jenny" en su uso poético paralelo del barco como un instrumento por el cual los enemigos, y en el caso de Dylan, los de mente estrecha que no querían aceptar los cambios culturales en curso, son destruidos.
